Job description

We are excited to consider a remote senior software engineer for this role in the Pacific Standard Time zone. If you are not in the PST zone you must be willing to work within our core hours. Remote team members will work out of their home office and should have successfully worked remotely in the past.

The Mobile Instrumentation team at New Relic builds instrumentation libraries that mobile developers use to better observe the apps they create. Our iOS and Android agents send telemetry and mobile data back to New Relic to be enhanced, analyzed, and visualized to help app developers troubleshoot their apps, be alerted to errors, and improve performance. As an engineer on the team, you'll help your peers build, maintain, and troubleshoot iOS, Android, and hybrid environment agents. Your team's work has a direct impact on our customers' abilities to observe and improve their apps.

How do you know this role is right for you? You enjoy creating high-scale and performant APIs and you think the details matter so you enjoy working within and enhancing specifications. You want to make tools that help thousands of mobile app developers create better software. You want to help New Relic lead the way for the industry to adopt open source standards in the mobile domain. Would you like to learn more?

What you’ll do:

Join us in building the next generation of lightweight open standards-based agents. Build SDKs and tools mobile developers will rely on. Create efficient protocols and networking capabilities to communicate telemetry to ingest backends so it can be quickly processed and acted upon by our users.

You will be collaborating on highly technical, complex projects, and we’ll be looking for you to make proactive recommendations on product direction and architecture, informed by your understanding of emerging projects and standards. You’ll be responsible for the technical planning, implementation, test, and support of the product your team creates. You can expect to work with strong partners from architecture, reliability, design, and product.

Your qualifications:

  • 5+ years of mobile software engineering experience building, shipping, and monitoring apps deployed at scale in iOS using the latest standard development environments.
  • A curious personality with an enthusiasm for learning, enjoy championing a continuous improvement mindset, and seek to drive to clarity in ambiguous environments
  • A passion for sharing your knowledge with a true growth mentality that encourages teammates to seek you out as a mentor. Actively mentor other engineers to facilitate mutual growth.
  • Comfort with developing in the open, collaborating with open source contributors, and keeping conversations publicly transparent on GitHub as we move our mobile agents into the Open Source domain in 2021

Nice to have:

  • Experience with or interest in contributing to and managing Open Source projects, specifically OpenTelemetry, or other open observability APIs and standards
  • Demonstrable understanding or experience with cross-platform mobile frameworks like React Native, Flutter, Xamarin, etc.
  • Experience with Javascript, specifically error handling and crash analytics
  • Preference will be provided to people who are capable of, or interested in, developing across both our iOS and Android products
  • Not sure if you meet the qualification?
  • We're strongly interested in having a complementary and capable team, with a broad set of skills and viewpoints. If this seems like ideal job, but you're uncertain if you qualify, apply anyway! Include a cover letter telling us why you're particularly interested in this position. Cover letters which include motivations impress the hiring manager.
