At Liberty Hill our work is focused on Los Angeles County, because we understand that what happens in L.A. often influences the nation.

As a public foundation, we provide critical support for social justice campaigns, and as a nonprofit, we lead research and policy initiatives designed to drive systemic change. Our training institute strengthens and connects community leaders and our role as a convener allows us to bring unusual allies together across our region to affect change.

Our Mission

Liberty Hill Foundation is a laboratory for social change philanthropy. We leverage the power of community organizers, donor activists, and allies to advance social justice through strategic investment in grants, leadership training, and campaigns.

Our Vision

Liberty Hill envisions a society in which all people have a powerful voice, including those currently shut out of our democracy, people cut off from opportunities because they are poor, because of their skin color, because of their gender or sexual orientation, because of where they live, or where they were born.

We will not rest until society provides justice and equality for all.

Our Priorities

Our Northstar is to build power in communities most impacted by systemic injustice to achieve social justice and equity.

The Fight for Justice Begins in Los Angeles.

Liberty Hill’s Agenda for a Just Future is a five-year campaign that seeks to tackle key areas of injustice and find long-term solutions to make L.A. the just and equitable place we know it can be. We have to pick our fights and Liberty Hill picks our youth, our homes, and our health.

Transformative Justice at Liberty Hil

Liberty Hill was founded on the principle that we cannot wait for change to come to us. We support the evolution of a new movement for racial justice and youth justice that seeks to dismantle systemic racism and traditional systems of harm in America. To strengthen that movement racial justice is embedded in the core principles of our work.

Nearly all of our competitive grants are awarded to organizations predominantly of communities of color and the majority are led by women.

LGBTQ & Gender Justice at Liberty Hil

Liberty Hill has been supporting LGBTQ community organizing in Los Angeles since the 1970’s. While the LGBTQ movement has changed the fabric of American society over the past half a century, equality has not expanded equally across all communities.

Low income, often immigrant, queer people of color are often at the forefront of fights for workers rights, racial justice, and reform of the criminal justice and immigration systems, yet they still face significant challenges.

Environmental Justice

For low income communities and communities of color, the dangers of exposure to environmental hazards are severe. People who live in "environmental justice neighborhoods" combining economic disadvantage and dangerous pollution are at a greater risk for cancer and other health consequences than residents of other areas. We currently have several programs in place to fight for a safer, healthier, greener L.A.

Liberty Hill knows that inequality is engineered, not inevitable. Through the Economic & Housing Justice priority area, Liberty Hill supports grassroots groups like worker centers, public health councils, advocacy groups, tenant and homeowner rights groups, and advocacy campaigns fighting for:

  1. Basic Labor Rights
  2. Enforcement Legislation
  3. Housing as a Human Right

Building Electoral Power At the Ballot Box

Liberty Vote! is a nonpartisan electoral engagement program committed to voter engagement in disenfranchised communities. It includes grants, ballot measure endorsements, and other electorally focused initiatives.

Creating policies to deal with critical issues that disproportionately affect low-income people of color, such as the effects of COVID-19, police brutality, and access to health care, education, job opportunity and safety net programs, will increasingly hinge on the voter participation and turnout of the people most affected by these injustices.

True change will not be possible unless we ensure their voices are heard and their votes are counted.
